Who plays Virgil on The Walking Dead?
The Walking Dead’s Virgil is played by actor Kevin Carroll. He’s perhaps best known for his roles as John Murphy on The Leftovers and Alton Saint on Snowfall. The latter is his most recent performance, with his stint on The Leftovers ending in 2017.
Everything we know about Virgil
In the larger scope of The Walking Dead multiverse, Virgil is a new character exclusive to the AMC TV series. To many fans, however, Virgil’s appearance shares similarities with a print character named Pete. When Michonne briefly leaves the community after the All Out War against the Saviors is won, Pete is a crew member on the ship where Michonne resides. In later issues, Pete becomes a member of Oceanside and helps recruit in the fight against the Whisperers.
All that being said, Virgil’s place in The Walking Dead TV show fits that mold quite cleanly. Not only is he already associated with Oceanside, but Michonne has already begun questioning him about his living situation at an island naval base. At face value it sounds like this character could play a bigger role on the show in the future, which is possibly why AMC opted to go with a unique name for the TV variation.
What Virgil might mean for the show
Looking even further into the show’s future, and given Virgil’s tangential ties to Pete, it’s also possible Virgil may have something to do with Michonne’s presumed exit from the series after Season 10. In episode 8, viewers learn that Virgil lives on an island naval base full of weapons and ammunition. Unable to get home, he asks Michonne for a boat in exchange for guns to help fight the Whisperers’ horde. Under agreement, Michonne gets Virgil a boat and leaves with him to collect the supplies. This visual is significant for fans of the comic, and it could even foreshadow how Michonne decides to leave Alexandria behind. After defeating the Whisperers, might she opt to spend some time at sea with Virgil? It’s a scenario that’s remixed just enough from the source material to sound plausible. With characters like Father Gabriel emerging as strong leaders at Alexandria, her role in that position has become far less necessary than it once was.
That’s all we know about Virgil for now, but we’ll likely learn more when new episodes of The Walking Dead start airing again in early 2020.
