So far, the character has closely mirrored her comic book counterpart, who appeared in 22 issues starting at number 171. However, there are a few differences—the AMC version of Princess does not seem to be living in a post-apocalyptic version of Pittsburgh, and in the comic books Michonne was among the group who met the character. However, the character is as chatty and as larger than life as the graphic novel version.
If AMC decide to give Princess the same backstory as the comics version, fans could be in for some upsetting scenes. In flashbacks, we learned that the character had spent her earlier years being locked in a closet and abused by her stepfather and stepbrother.
The character was first revealed by AMC to be joining The Walking Dead series in fall 2019. In that announcement, the network mentioned that the comics version eventually became part of the Alexandria group, suggesting that the TV version may follow suit.
Before joining The Walking Dead, Lázaro appeared in seven episodes of Season 3 of the Lethal Weapon reboot. She has also recently starred in SMILF and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. She is also soon to appear in Black Bear, a movie that premiered at Sundance and sees her star alongside Aubrey Plaza.
Her introduction could also give fans a hint of where The Walking Dead is going next. In the comics, she is one of the people key to the group discovering the truly functional society that is The Commonwealth, which suggests that the town will be introduced soon.
However, it may be some time before we learn what the purpose of Princess’ introduction is. Though The Walking Dead Season 10 was due to have two more episodes, the novel coronavirus pandemic currently incapacitating the planet has meant that the season finale is not yet ready. In a statement, AMC said: “Current events have unfortunately made it impossible to complete post-production of The Walking Dead Season 10 finale, so the current season will end with its 15th episode on April 5.”
Though the statement also noted that, “the planned finale will appear as a special episode later in the year,” AMC has noted when that finale might be.
The Walking Dead Season 10 continues next Sunday on AMC.
