Fans last saw Michonne in episode 8, and we finally learn what happens to her in episode 13. She and Virgil arrive on his island to find that the man does not, in fact, have the weapons or supplies he previously promised. Instead, he explains that he’s not used to walkers and needs Michonne to kill his zombified family for him. He says he was once part of a group that took people in, but things went haywire when a newcomer died. This propelled him to lock all the doors to the base, not knowing his wife and children were still inside.

Michonne is also locked in by Virgil, and she hallucinates after drinking tea that he gives her. We see several scenes from the past with Michonne in different perspectives. There’s Michonne as a Savior, Michonne as a scorned hitchhiker and she’s even shot by Daryl and Rick. In the middle of the night when the haze wears off, Michonne discovers that other members of Virgil’s community are still alive and locked inside the base as well. It’s revealed that Virgil intended to set them free but wanted to use Michonne as protection in case they responded with violence.

When Michonne discovers this she stabs Virgil in the leg while his former community members overwhelm him before he’s able to escape. They agree to spare him as long as everyone’s allowed to leave the island. Even though everyone including Michonne is prepared to depart, Virgil stays behind because of a promise he made to his wife.

While Michonne gathers her things she sees a suspicious pair of boots and sniffs them. Knowing that these once belonged to Rick, she asks Virgil where he found them. He takes her to a military-looking boat that recently washed ashore. Amongst the supplies is an iPhone with “Rick” written in the top-right corner. There’s also a location in the ship’s logbook, which ultimately drives Michonne to leave Alexandria to head north and find him. She says goodbye to her two children and embarks on her quest.

The episode ends with Michonne being approached by a man and woman asking for help, suggesting “they’ll leave without us.” When she asks who “they” are, the duo points to a militant group up ahead. Given the military design of Rick’s boat, it’s assumed she may be on track to finding his new community.

Michonne’s last episode on The Walking Dead offers more questions than answers, but it sets things up beautifully for what’s believed to be at least one TV movie that will fully explore Rick’s fate and his journey leading up to the present point in the Walking Dead timeline. Flashbacks put Michonne’s character at peace with her past, and now she’s ready to discover what the future holds. Unfortunately for fans of the series, though, it may be awhile before we learn what happens next.

The Walking Dead episode 13 airs March 22 on AMC.
