‘The Voice’ Viewers Split Over Winner as Twitter Erupts With Bias Claims
Bryce Leatherwood was revealed to be the winner of The Voice season 22, and he was from Team Blake. Over the course of the show’s history, Blake Shelton has produced nine winners in total.
The 22-year-old Leatherwood came to the attention of Shelton during his blind audition, in which he performed Shelton’s version of the Conway Twitty classic “Goodbye Time.”
Through weeks of training and mentorship under team leader Shelton, the singer quickly became a firm favorite among viewers.
Shelton was delighted with the results and, according to NBC, said: “Bryce has an incredible country voice.
“I want to continue to learn who he is as an artist. If Conway Twitty is any indication, then we’re gonna have a lot of fun working together.”
However, while Shelton was ecstatic with Leatherwood coming out on top, as were some viewers, not all fans of the show were pleased. Some even said the contest was biased, while others remarked that Omar Jose Cardona should have won, and they took to Twitter to share their opinion.
One viewer lamented The Voice’s bias towards country-music singers, tweeting: “Bryce Wins it… Like I said earlier in the season, this show is going to continue on a downward spiral except they somehow stop the Country Bias or just make a Show for them Country singers totally.”
Another fan on Twitter wrote: “Omar not winning #TheVoice reeks of the racial bias in America. They did the same thing to Wendy last year, and I was horrified. White mediocrity always wins against Black/Colored excellence on that show. Tragic.”
Another viewer added: “Omar Jose Cardona could be the best voice of this generation and mf BRYCE LEATHERWOOD WON??? This is absolutely embarrassing for America”
One viewer tweeted John Legend, who was Cardona’s voice coach, posting: “Omar deserved the win. John should 100% take Omar on tour with him or set him up with a record deal of some sort. John needs to do Justice to the pure ROBBERY we just witnessed.”
No all viewers were unhappy with the results, of course, and there were many who went on social media to share their congratulations with Shelton and Leatherwood.
One viewer wrote: “Omg!!! This country girl from Utah is so excited for you and team Blake. This was such an amazing year for all the coaches. But so happy for Bryce.”
Another fan posted: “Bryce Leatherwood was incredible and you were a great coach, and I had Bryce winning on my team after his performance Monday night.”
One viewer also wrote: “I for one think Bryce deserved to win! His emotion in his songs are what sealed the deal!”
