Steve Blackman, the show’s creator and showrunner, spoke to Newsweek about the biggest moments in the new season, and explained how they are likely to impact the show in future.
As might have been expected, this article contains major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 3, so proceed with caution.
What Will The Umbrella Academy Do Now They’ve Lost Their Powers?
After entering the Hotel Oblivion through a portal from the Hotel Obsidian it was revealed that Reginald Hargreeves intended to drain the Umbrella Academy of their powers to reset their timeline.
When the Umbrella Academy return to the present day they realize that not only has the timeline been reset, but they’ve all lost their powers.
Of giving the characters this challenge, Blackman reflected: “I wanted to play on two aspects, one emotional, one just physical.
“The emotional aspect is, you know, is their life better without the powers? Reginald has given them, in his mind, a gift, he’s taken away the thing they’ve complained about the most, which is having these powers that they blamed for wrecking their lives.
“So now he said, ‘Okay, you’re normal.’ Now, how do you go about being normal if everyday of your life before that you’ve had special abilities. Can you go back to normal? So that was one of the things.
“And I also wanted to set a challenge for myself, and the writers, to find a way obviously to bring back their powers, which will be an interesting thing to do next year.
“So you know, I want to see what they’re like without them. I want to see if they’re truly happy or not.”
Will The Sparrow Academy Return?
The Sparrow Academy certainly made their mark on the show’s third season, even if not all of them survive until the end of the new episodes.
Ben (Justin H. Min) returned alongside Marcus (Justin Cornwell), Fei (Britne Oldford), Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), Jayme (Cazzie David), Alphonso (Jake Epstein), and cube Christopher, but over the course of the new season, almost all of them were killed.
Ben and Sloane were the only two members of The Sparrow Academy to survive until the finale, but even then only Ben remained with The Umbrella Academy after Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) successfully reset the timeline thanks to Allison’s (Emmy Raver-Lampman) help.
Now, given the timeline has been reset completely, it stands to reason that the members of The Sparrow Academy are alive once more, they are just likely scattered across the globe.
When asked about the possibility of the characters returning, Blackman told Newsweek: “Well, I don’t want to give too much away but, you know, I think they possibly could do their own [show].
“I think they could [get] their own spin off possibly, and I’m not saying we’re doing that I’m just saying that they’re a very interesting family. They’re so different than our family.
“I loved working with all of them, I thought their dynamic with with each other was a lot of fun and I regret a little bit that I killed them off so quickly.
“I would have loved to see them a little longer than I did, but they were just wonderful, great actors and really fun characters.”
Who is Abigail Hargreeves and How Will She Impact Season 4?
Another aspect of the finale that will no doubt interest fans is the return of Abigail Hargreeves, Reginald’s wife, who only briefly appeared in one scene in the first season.
The character’s body was shown frozen in a contained chamber on the moon in the third season, thus explaining why Luther (Tom Hopper) had been sent up there in Season 1, and then she later stood by Reginald’s side in the closing moments of Season 3, back from the dead.
Blackman shared how Abigail will be a hugely important character in the show’s future, explaining: “She’s going to be a very powerful character in the world going forward.
“We have another season, she’s someone to be reckoned with and she will bring a lot of effect on who Hargreaves is, and their dynamic.
“She’s a very intelligent woman, a very powerful woman, and she is someone that I think will surprise the audience when we get to meet her.”
